Las Vegas and Vicinity Daytrippin - A guide to adventures both in--and within traveling distance of--Las Vegas, Nevada by Russell & Kathlynn Spencer
Let’s start our “adventure” in Las Vegas with a brief look at some of the history of this unique city. Why not visit some of the historic places and places where the history is stored? How about visiting some of her more permanent and interesting attractions? How about white tigers, and dancing dolphins? Want to visit lions in the casino of a hotel? Let’s take a drive to Hoover Dam. Ever drive north along the west shore of Lake Mead? What’s downstream from Hoover Dam? How about a tour of an 1860’s mine at Techatticup? (One of the three mines which we will visit and explore on our travels.) Hey, don’t forget Laughlin, Nevada. While we are in Laughlin, let’s climb on board a high-speed jet boat and take a ride down the Colorado River, through Topoc Gorge, and walk around on the London Bridge, London Bridge, direct from London, England. Route 66, you bet! Let’s take the “Mother Road” from Kingman, Arizona through Goldroad, where we go underground in another mine, through Oatman, Arizona to the Colorado River and the original Route 66 bridge, which once carried thousands of people migrating into California. And yes, we will travel Route 66 for a short distance in California too!
Let’s stand at point in Death Valley National Park and on one side see the highest point in the Continental United States and turn to look down at the lowest spot in the continental United States. Let’s drive through the unusual East Mojave National Preserve on our “alternate” route from “Vegas” to Southern California. Lets visit the “Castles in Clay,” apartments miners have dug out of the earth. At Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge we will watch water arrive which has been under ground for thousands of years and so clear it almost shines. Traveling north we will stop at Rhyolite Ghost Town, once home to nearly 10,000 people and today claims to be the most visited authentic ghost town in the west. After leaving Rhyolite we can drive through Titus Canyon and see petroglyphs and a visit a true “scam” ghost town.
Is there a more beautiful place than Zion National Park? Hey! Let’s go there too and let’s visit some of the other interesting places in Southwestern Utah.
Let’s visit the numerous other adventures found in this book.
