Forty Years in the Wilderness by James W. Hulse

"This interpretive history of Nevada is partly a social and political statement  that draws on technical, historical, and political documents. The author spent his childhood in Pioche during the Depression and World War II and he worked as a reporter in Reno during the 1940's and 1950's.  The first four chapters deal with the state's limited resources, migratory patterns, unstable population, and uneven regional growth from 1940 to 1980.  The last three chapters raise thoughtful questions about the state's key source of revenue, gambling.  Published by University of Nevada Press (1964)."
